Palo Alto

Partly through its close relationship with Stanford University Palo Alto is considered by many Santa Clara County residents to be the  best city in the Bay Area. It has a good share of very high end homes and mansions, but much of the city consists of tract homes designed to serve the middle class, and apartments for students and employees of the University.

Stanford University, is actually outside the city limits and is a major economic force in itself with not only a world class university, but a large business park (150 companies and 23,000 employees), a major medical center, and a giant mall.

Palo Alto public schools are superb in every way and well supported by the parents lucky enough to have their children attend them. In 1995 the school district passed a campus renovation bond issue for $143 million which has renovated or rebuilt every school and installed modern technology in all. These schools are available to all children living within their attendance zones. In addition there are 14 private schools in the city.

This is a small city (63,000 inhabitants) that prides itself on having the best mix of culture and commerce in the whole of Silicon Valley.

Commuting north and south is greatly enhanced by highways 101 and 280 which run either side of the city all the way from San Jose to San Francisco. In addition there is the regular commuter train which also links those 2 cities and has 2 stations in Palo Alto.
